Neck & Head Immobilisation Collars
Neck braces (cervical collars) are devices that are used to immobilise the head, relieve neck pain and encourage healing. Generally they can be grouped into three styles; extrication, hard and soft. Many employ a mix of hard and soft materials for effective immobilisation.
Extrication collars are used in emergency situations as a tool to immobilise the head and neck while providing access for pulse checks, advanced airway procedures, and visualisation.
Hard collars are often made from a mix of foam and plastic. They restrict head rotation and side-to side movement more than soft collars. Soft collar options can be used to relieve pain while soft tissues in your neck recover from injury or surgery. Commonly constructed from foam, soft braces are a more “everyday” style that allows the user a good range of movement while in recovery. They are also easier for the patient to take on and off.
